Why AV Receivers?

An AV receiver is the brain of a home theater system. It decodes surround sound formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, powers your speakers, switches between video sources, and increasingly serves as a streaming hub. Choosing the right receiver determines the quality ceiling of your entire setup.

The AV receiver market has consolidated around a handful of brands — Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, and Yamaha account for the vast majority of sales — and the feature sets have converged around 8K HDMI, immersive audio formats, and room correction. The differences that matter are in sound quality, room correction algorithms, and ecosystem support.

What We Look For

We evaluate AV receivers on four key criteria: sound quality in both surround and stereo modes, room correction effectiveness, build quality and connectivity, and overall value. We run each receiver through a standardized home theater setup with calibrated speakers, measuring both objective performance and subjective listening impressions.

Room correction is particularly important. The difference between a well-corrected room and an uncorrected one is often larger than the difference between receivers at different price points. That is why we weight room correction technology heavily in our rankings.

Two receivers that did not make our ranked list but deserve mention: the Denon AVR-X3800H ($1,500) fills the gap between our budget and premium picks with 9.4 channels and Dirac Live, while the Anthem MRX 540 ($2,000) offers the best room correction in the business with full Anthem Room Correction (ARC) and a neutral, studio-monitor sound signature.
