Sound Quality

The Rega Planar 3 sounds like the grown-up version of what every turntable at lower price points aspires to be. The combination of the RB330 tonearm and the Elys 2 moving magnet cartridge — both Rega-designed and manufactured — forms a carefully matched tracking system that extracts musical information from vinyl with a precision and coherence that budget alternatives cannot approach. The upgrade from a Planar 1 Plus to the Planar 3 is not incremental: it is a step change in resolution, dynamic range, and musical engagement.

The sonic character is Rega’s characteristic PRAT — pace, rhythm, and timing — applied to vinyl playback. Music has drive and energy. The rhythmic foundation of a recording is communicated with authority, and the leading edge of transients is fast and clean. The imaging is precise, with a well-defined stereo field and stable instrument placement. Bass is tight and well-controlled; the low end is substantial without boom or overhang. The midrange is natural and musical, with a slight warmth that flatters acoustic instruments without distorting timbres.

The Elys 2 cartridge included with the Planar 3 is a proper hi-fi cartridge rather than a cost-cutting inclusion. It is voiced to complement the Rega tonearm geometry and the RB330’s bearing characteristics, and the system-level optimization is audible. Upgrading the cartridge to a Rega Exact or a third-party MM cartridge further improves resolution, but the out-of-the-box performance is already genuinely excellent.

Build Quality

The Planar 3’s construction reflects four decades of iterative refinement of a single design philosophy. The phenolic resin plinth is lightweight and internally braced to minimize resonance transmission from the motor and external vibrations to the tonearm/cartridge interface. The 12mm float glass platter has a uniform mass distribution that contributes to stable speed maintenance and excellent resonance rejection at the platter surface.

The RB330 tonearm is the heart of the system and the component that most distinguishes the Planar 3 from lower-cost alternatives. Its bearings are among the lowest friction in the industry, minimizing tracking error and allowing the cartridge stylus to follow the groove geometry with exceptional accuracy. The arm tube is a single extruded aluminum section — no joints, no resonant nodes. The headshell bias compensation system ensures precise vertical tracking angle across the full width of the record.

The 24-volt motor drive is Rega’s current-generation low-noise design, and its consistency is audible: wow and flutter measurements are exceptionally low, and the speed stability contributes directly to the clarity of piano and sustained string notes that reveal speed irregularities in lesser drives.

Value Proposition

At $945 with the Elys 2 cartridge included, the Planar 3 represents honest pricing for what it delivers. A comparable-quality tonearm alone — the RB330 — sells for $400 as a separate upgrade component. The cartridge adds another $200 at retail. The Planar 3 packages these components with the matching plinth, motor, and platter for a price that cannot be replicated by assembling the equivalent from separate sources.

For vinyl enthusiasts who have outgrown entry-level turntables and are ready to invest in a system that will remain satisfying for a decade, the Planar 3 is the standard recommendation in the $800–1,200 class. Paired with a quality phono preamp — the Rega Fono MM or an external unit — and connected to a revealing amplifier and speaker system, it is a turntable that will challenge you to find records worth listening to rather than equipment to upgrade.

The Verdict
Exceptional
9.0

The Rega Planar 3 is one of the most recommended turntables in hi-fi for good reason. The RB330 tonearm and Elys 2 cartridge combination extracts musical information from vinyl that competitors at this price simply cannot match, and the mature design needs no improvement.
