The trade-off is portability. Unlike the XM4, the WH-1000XM5 does not fold flat, meaning it takes up more volume in a bag. Build quality is primarily high-quality plastic with soft-touch surfaces — it feels well-made and light, but it does not have the premium metal-accented feel of some competitors at this price point.

The noise cancellation alone justifies the price for frequent travelers — it is genuinely the best available, reducing low-frequency drone (aircraft engines, HVAC, train noise) to near inaudibility. Sony’s Speak-to-Chat feature, which automatically pauses music when you start speaking, has become essential once you’ve used it. Multipoint Bluetooth connection lets it pair to two devices simultaneously.
The competition is serious — Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra offers a different but equally compelling ANC profile and a more neutral sound signature. But the Sony’s LDAC support, superior battery life, and slightly better fit for larger heads make it the more versatile long-term companion.
